The Reset Mindset with Penny Zenker
SHOW NOTES: Episode 141
We are excited to welcome Penny Zenker on today! She is sharing more about focus and productivity which is crucial for entrepreneurs facing burnout. Penny Zenker is known as “The Focusologist.” She’s a sought after international keynote speaker and best-selling author. She shares insights on eliminating distractions, perfectionism, and self-sabotage to maximize results.
Penny shares insights about her new book, “The Reset Mindset.” Penny explains that this book is designed for everyone, addressing the widespread issue of distraction and the need for focus in our daily lives. She describes how many people are not just distracted but are, in fact, addicted to distractions, which can hinder productivity and creativity.
The “Reset Mindset” encourages people to take control of their focus by recognizing moments when they feel overwhelmed or unfocused. Penny introduces the concept of “reset moments,” which are intentional pauses that allow individuals to reassess their priorities and regain clarity. These moments are crucial for recognizing signs of burnout, irritability, or lack of creativity, whether in oneself or in others, such as colleagues or family members.
Penny outlines a three-step practice that forms the core of the Reset Mindset:
Recognize: The first step involves acknowledging when you are feeling overwhelmed or distracted. This could manifest as irritability, exhaustion, or a lack of creativity. Recognizing these signals is essential for initiating a reset.
Get Perspective: Once you’ve recognized the need for a reset, the next step is to gain perspective. This involves stepping back from the chaos and emotions to assess the situation more clearly. Penny introduces the 80/20 rule as a tool for this step, encouraging individuals to identify the 20% of their efforts that yield 80% of their results. This helps in focusing on what truly matters.
Realign and Execute: The final step is to realign your focus based on the insights gained from the previous steps. This means determining what to prioritize and what distractions to eliminate.
Penny emphasizes that this framework is not just a time management tool; it’s also a communication tool that fosters empathy and better listening. It can enhance creativity and innovation by encouraging openness to new ideas. Ultimately, it serves as a resilience tool, helping you to let go of what they cannot control and focus on what you can.
