Our Definition of Success
Today, we’re doing something special: We’re talking about what exactly it means to be a successful blogger. We want to do this because people ask us all the time, “What can I do to become a successful blogger?” and we’ve answered the question in many different ways on our podcast and in our resources.
After having so many guests on our podcast over the years, we’ve realized many of us think about being a successful blogger as reaching a certain level of revenue. But what we’ve come to understand is, while making money is important, there are many things that are more important to defining success. So today, we’re giving you our definition of a successful blogger–so you can have a starting point to customize your own version of success.
Our Definition of a Successful Blogger
You Control Your Schedule: First and foremost, you get to control your schedule. You don’t answer to anyone, and you can spend time with the people that matter while also getting time to work and focus. This will look different for individual bloggers, but ask yourself if your current schedule helps define what is a successful blog to you.
We won’t get into blogger burnout in this episode, but if you’d like to hear more on that, check out the podcast episode we did on burnout.
You’re Able to Use Your Talents and Impact Others: Maybe your blog allows you to use your creativity. Maybe your current job (or past job) was very rigid, but blogging allows you to think outside the box. Maybe you’re really good at coaching and your blog allows you to come alongside people and help them. Do you consider that a form of success? Because we do!
What impact do you have on others? It doesn’t have to be a huge or life changing impact. It could be something small, like helping people figure out what to make for dinner. That impact made their life easier for 30 minutes a day.
You’re Recognized as the Authority or Expert: You start to be the go-to person for questions in your niche. People might send you a message to ask a specific question about your topic or they might recommend you to a friend. Being the expert, and then getting connected with other people in bigger conversations, is a marker of success for us.
Your Definition of a Successful Blogger
Ultimately, success is deeply personal and you should spend time reflecting to define and embrace your unique version of it. Whether you’re just starting or have been blogging for years, growth and success are always within reach.
