How to Become a Blogger

Is there a magical key to success when it comes to being a blogger? Nope! All it takes is some basic knowledge and a lot of hard work! Having someone to guide you along the way is helpful too!

Let’s start with an important distinction before we dive into this post. Almost anyone can become a blogger, but what most people mean when they ask how to become a blogger is, how do I become a successful blogger?

Now, the definition of success can vary wildly, of course. We’ll dig into that on another post. For now, let’s assume that successful equals starting a blog that you find fulfilling and that is able to reach and help others in your target audience.

Key Step to Becoming a Blogger

  1. Decide what you want to blog about and make sure there is an audience for it.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the various platforms and decide which one is best for you.
  3. Decide on your goals for this blog and create a plan to help you achieve them.
  4. Do your research and create a strategy.
  5. Learn the technology and business and start promoting and growing your blog.

Defining your Niche

One of the most important aspects of creating a successful blog is to ensure that people will be interested in what you are blogging about.

It will be important to do your research and make sure there is a market out there of people who are looking for what you will be offering.

Taking the time to do this initial research may seem overwhelming, but ultimately it can be the make or break for your blog.

Choosing a Blogging Platform

There are so many options out there for creating a blog, from Squarespace to Wix to WordPress and more. It can be confusing trying to decide which one is best.

If your blog is simply a hobby or you need a quick and easy website but aren’t worried about getting much traffic, any one of these platforms may work for you.

But, if you want to get the most out of your blog, we suggest setting up a self-hosted website and using as your content management system.

Create a Business Plan

True, this doesn’t sound fun, but is an important aspect of creating a successful blog. A business plan doesn’t need to be complicated, but if you want to grow and make money, you need to have an idea of how you will do this.

From deciding how to structure your business, to learning how to track your income and expenses, to decide what avenues to pursue for revenue, to creating a budget, it pays in the long run to take the time up front to create an initial plan for your blog.

Build a Strategy

When you first get started blogging it can feel overwhelming. You’ll get a lot of advice from well meaning friends or fellow bloggers about how to grow your business.

There are so many platforms to consider when it comes to promoting and growing your blog. How will you know where to spend your time? Should you promote on Instagram? Facebook? Pinterest? How do you drive Google traffic?

It’s important to take time to consider your overall goals and to build a strategy in one or two areas at a time. Just remember, you can do anything but you can’t do everything all at once! This is a process that will require dedication over a long period of time to see growth, but will be so worth it!

Learn the technology

If you are new to blogging, or want a fresh start, it’s worth taking the time to learn about how to properly set up your new website. There are so many factors involved in creating a website that will perform well for you and be able to grow with you that its’ best to gain some understanding before you dive in.

You’ll want to ensure you have a website that is optimized for SEO, performs well on speed tests, is build on a solid theme by someone who understands blogging and updates the themes regularly and is built with user experience in mind.

There are tons of free and paid resources out there where you can spend time learning the ins and outs of setting up your website! You’ll need to find the resources that work best for you!
