Building a Home Decor and Lifestyle Blog with Bluesky Home
Are you interested in turning your passion for home decor, DIY, or crafting into a blog? Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow your home decor and lifestyle blog, this episode has valuable insights from Carol Lander, the creative force behind Bluesky at Home. Carol shares her journey into blogging, the challenges she’s faced, and her advice for anyone who wants to get started in the home decor and lifestyle blog space.
Carol’s blogging journey didn’t start with home decor. In fact, she initially thought she’d be a food blogger. But her passion for home decor and DIY projects soon became her focus, and Bluesky at Home was born. Once she finally started, she realized that while there’s a lot to learn, the creative side of blogging was something she truly enjoyed.
How to Get Started With a Home Decor and Lifestyle Blog
Just Start: One common fear for new bloggers is wondering if they’re qualified to share their creations online. Imposter syndrome is real, and Carol is no stranger to it. Carol’s best advice? Just go for it.
Carol says that you don’t need formal training to start a blog — she doesn’t have any formal home decor training, and neither do most home decor bloggers. It’s okay if your projects or photos aren’t perfect. Just put your projects out there and know you’ll improve over time.
Focus on Email Marketing: Email marketing is a powerful tool for bloggers. Carol explains how building an email list and crafting engaging newsletters can significantly boost your blog’s reach and reader engagement (and eventually monetize your blog). She recommends creating free resources to get people to sign up for your list.
Budget for your Blog: Carol recommends reusing materials as much as possible in your home decor and lifestyle blog. But when it’s not possible to reuse, she reminds listeners that like any business, blogging does require some financial investment.
While the creative projects may be fun, don’t go overboard at stores like Joanne’s, Hobby Lobby, and Target. If you want to monetize your blog eventually, Carol recommends looking at affiliate marketing or selling printables.
Build a Supportive Lifestyle Blog Community: Blogging can feel lonely at times, especially since most of it is done solo from your home. But Carol says connecting with other bloggers can make all the difference. She recommends going to conferences, staying connected on social media, and joining masterminds to meet people and gain knowledge.
Always Bet on Yourself
Carol brings a fresh and comforting perspective on blogging. She says that if you want to do it, just get started and remember to bet on yourself. You might feel like you aren’t capable of blogging, but if it’s something you’re passionate about, you can figure it out. Then, with the support of a community, smart budgeting, and persistence, it can become a fulfilling creative outlet—and even a profitable business.
