7 ways to create a good user experience for your blog
SHOW NOTES: Episode 38
Have you ever thought about the user experience with your blog? It is so important to be sure that you are providing a good user experience for your readers. If your blog is hard to read, the readers can’t find what they are looking for, or your page speed is slow, readers may click off. Today we want to share with you the seven way to create a good user experience for your blog.
1. Create useful content that people are going to find simple.
Make your content easy to digest and simplify it in a way that your reader is benefited from it. You want your content to be simple, clear, and concise and easily broken down so that they will stay on your site. Make sure that you are answering the questions that they need surrounding a given topic but that you do it in a way that you’re not going to lose them with too much content. You can break down a lot of content into a smaller series or multiple blog posts.
2. Page speed and optimization
You could have the most well written content but if it takes forever to load, or is clunky, or hard to read, people are going to click off. You want a well-designed website and make it optimized for SEO. You need a well-designed theme and a good hosting company. Your text should also be easy to read. Think about what the user experience when your readers show up. You can go to your website yourself and test it out too!
3. Call to Action
People need to know what to do next. They don’t always know what to do if you don’t tell them. If you want someone to take a specific action like signing up for your email list, tell them.
4. Headlines
How are you going to get your reader’s attention? Write really good and enticing headlines. You want them to be interested in what you wrote and you can do that with a well-written headline. Make sure the words are enticing and make sure the text itself is bold and easy to read. You want to make sure the people are wanting to click or they’re looking for more content.
5. Easy to navigate
A search bar offers good user experience. You want to make sure that your menus are easy to read and that you have your menus set up in a way that they know exactly what you’re about and what kind of information that you are providing them.
Be sure that there is a good way to contact you on there. Having a contact me page is important and that will directly link to your email.
We actually don’t recommend putting your Instagram at the bottom of your site. This can slow your site down and may cause the reader to go to your Instagram and stay there. However, we do want them to be able to connect with you on other platforms so sharing your social sharing buttons is fine.
Another suggestion that we give our students is to make sure that your readers know how to get to the important information that you have created for them. You can take your top blog posts or what you think are going to be your top blog posts and put those in your sidebar or have a “start here” area. You want to make sure your information is easy for them to find.
6. You should always be reiterating important information.
We are all so busy and can get distracted. Make it easy for your readers to get the important information. Answer their questions. Put important bullet points at the top of your post.It is ok to to reiterate the important information.
7. Understanding what your users need
If you are writing about a certain topic, it is likely that topic was an area that you needed help with at some point. Think back to who you were when you needed that information and what you needed help with. Remember where you came from and know that you are providing valuable content for people who need it.
